Health & Safety Fundamentals (Half-Day)

One of the most important aspects of the internal responsibility system in
the workplace is an effective Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). In this training session participants will learn:

  • The legislative requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act  and industrial regulations
  • The role of the worker, supervisor, employees and others in the workplace
  • The rights and responsibilities of JHSC members
  • The importance of establishing goals for the Committee
  • Assigning responsibility for various members of the Committee
  • The role of the certified members of the Committee in resolving OHS issues
  • The types of inspections and surveys the Committee participates in

In addition, participants will learn how to establish a hazard priority system to resolve health and safety issues in the workplace using case study exercises.

Workplace Inspections (Half-Day)

Workplaces are required to be inspected under the OHS Act to identify unsafe acts or conditions, which may cause injury to employees. In this training session participants will learn:

  • The legislative requirements for conducting workplace inspections
  • The process of hazard recognition
  • The tools for evaluating the various hazards in the workplace
  • The systems for implementing adequate controls to reduce the hazard
  • The requirements for an effective inspection and reporting system in the workplace
  • Case studies will be used 

Case studies will be used to facilitate understanding and to provide a practical component.

Accident/Incident Investigation (Half-Day)

All accidents and incidents should be investigated in the workplace to determine the events and conditions, which caused them, and corrective actions recommended. In this training session participants will learn:

  • The definition of an accident and an incident
  • The concept of accident causation and levels of severity
  • The basic principles of accident investigation
  • The process to determine basic causes/conditions
  • The various types of accident reports required in the workplace

Case studies will be used to facilitate understanding and to provide a practical component.
